Why I Became an English Teacher at 38 (The Story Behind English Tomorrow)

Hi! My name is Scott. It’s good to see you today.

Most teachers start young. They know at 22 exactly what they want to do with their lives. I didn’t. I went back to school at 38 years old — and this is the story of why. It starts with a friend.

The co-worker who saw something I didn’t

Before English Tomorrow existed, I was just a guy from Modesto, California, working a regular job. But I had this co-worker who paid attention. He watched how I explained things to people, how I encouraged them, how much I smiled while doing it (too much, according to some). And one day he said something that changed my life:

“You should teach English. You’d be great at it.”

I laughed it off at first. Who goes back to college in their late thirties? But he kept saying it. And somewhere deep down, I started to believe him.

In 2015, he passed away. He never got to see me enroll. He never got to see me major in English and ESL, never saw a single lesson, never heard one of my terrible animal jokes (he dodged that one, honestly).

But everything you see here — every video, every word, every finger dance — exists because one person believed in someone and said it out loud.

Why “English Tomorrow”?

Because English isn’t a destination — it’s a journey you start today. One word, one phrase, one conversation at a time. Every lesson I make is a small promise: tomorrow, your English will be a little better than today.

What I believe about learning English

• Mistakes are not failures. They’re proof you’re trying — and trying is the whole game. Nobody at English Tomorrow ever feels dumb for getting a word wrong.
• You learn by doing. Real apples, real props, music, art, stories, and the big wide world outside the classroom.
• Every word opens a door. Every sentence you speak makes your world bigger. You are becoming an unstoppable force.

The part where I get to say thank you

If my friend could see English Tomorrow now, I think I know what he’d say: keep up the great work, and grow your brand. So that’s exactly what I’m doing — for him, and for every beginner who’s a little nervous about opening their mouth and trying.

And someday, when a student who learned their first English words with me grows up — maybe a doctor, maybe a teacher, maybe a business leader — and thinks back and says “thank you, Scott”… I’ll know exactly who to pass that thank-you along to.
